At FHG, we strive to make homeschooling both meaningful and manageable for the entire family. Whether you are teaching one child or several children across multiple grade levels, our goal is to simplify the educational journey while maintaining academic excellence and a Christ-centered focus.

To accomplish this, we utilize family-style curriculum whenever possible, allowing students of different ages to study the same time periods, historical events, biblical themes, scientific concepts, and great books together. While each child works at his or her own developmental level and pace, families can learn together, discuss ideas together, and build a shared educational experience.

How Our Four-Year Learning Cycle Works

To make homeschooling simpler for families with multiple children, we use a four-year family learning cycle. Students across all grade levels study the same historical period and biblical themes together while completing age-appropriate assignments based on their stage of learning. 

Year 1: Ancients

  • History: Creation through the Roman Empire
  • Bible: Old Testament
  • Science: Anatomy/Biology
  • Fine Arts: Ancient & Medieval Art

Year 2: Middle Ages & Renaissance (current cycle)

  • History: Early Church through the Reformation
  • Bible: Church History and the Growth of Christianity
  • Science: Chemistry 
  • Fine Arts: Renaissance Art & Music

Year 3: Early Modern

  • History: Exploration through the 1800s
  • Bible: Biblical Worldview and Christian Influence in History
  • Science: Physics and Engineering
  • Fine Arts: Classical & American Art

Year 4: Modern Era

  • History: 1900 to Present
  • Bible: Apologetics, Current Events, and Christian Living

At FHG, Students Thrive Through the Classical Model

  • Lower Grammar Stage (K–2) – Building foundational knowledge through stories, memorization, exploration, and skill development.
  • Upper Grammar Stage (3–5) – Expanding knowledge, strengthening academic skills, and making connections across subjects.
  • Logic Stage (6–8) – Developing critical thinking, reasoning, discussion, and analytical skills.
  • Rhetoric Stage (9–12) – Cultivating wisdom, clear communication, leadership, and the ability to articulate and defend ideas from a biblical worldview.

By combining family-style learning at home with age-appropriate instruction and discussion at co-op, we seek to partner with parents in raising students who love God, pursue truth, think deeply, and communicate effectively.

  • Nursery (Ages 0-4): Our nursery serves the younger siblings of enrolled students, providing a loving and engaging environment during co-op hours. Because we are a true cooperative community, parents share in the ministry by taking turns serving in the nursery on a rotating schedule throughout the year.
  • Pre-K (Ages 4-5): Our Pre-K program follows the Gentle + Classical curriculum, blending short interactive lessons with purposeful play and exploration. Students are introduced to Bible stories, literature, memory work, music, nature study, and early learning skills in a warm, Christ-centered environment. Through hands-on activities, imaginative play, and gentle instruction, children develop a love of learning while building the habits and skills needed for future academic success.
  • Grammar Stage (Kindergarten – 5th Grade): “Knowing”  The Grammar Stage is the foundation of a classical education. During these years, children are naturally gifted at memorizing and absorbing information, making this an ideal time to build a strong foundation of knowledge and skills. Students focus on learning foundational facts, developing strong reading and writing abilities, and cultivating habits of attention, diligence, and wonder.

Our Grammar Stage classes emphasize memorization, narration, recitation, hands-on learning, and exposure to rich ideas across multiple subjects. Students build a framework of knowledge that will prepare them for deeper understanding and critical thinking in later years.

  • Logic Stage (6th-8th Grade): “Understanding” The Logic Stage builds upon the foundation established during the grammar years by helping students move beyond simply knowing facts to understanding how those facts connect and why they matter. As students mature, they naturally begin to ask questions, analyze ideas, and seek deeper meaning. We intentionally cultivate these abilities through discussion, critical thinking, writing, and logical reasoning.

Students learn to evaluate arguments, identify fallacies, make connections across subjects, and thoughtfully engage with history, literature, science, and Scripture. Classes emphasize discussion, inquiry, worldview development, and the ability to think critically while remaining grounded in biblical truth.

  • Rhetoric Stage (9th-12th Grade): “Wisdom & Expression” The Rhetoric Stage is the culmination of the classical model, where students learn to express and defend what they believe with wisdom, confidence, and grace. Having built a foundation of knowledge in the grammar years and developed critical thinking skills during the logic stage, students are now prepared to communicate truth clearly and persuasively.

Students engage deeply with great books, primary sources, theology, history, literature, and worldview studies while refining their writing, speaking, and leadership abilities. Through discussion, research, presentations, and analytical writing, they learn to articulate ideas thoughtfully, evaluate competing worldviews, and engage culture from a biblical perspective.

Our goal is to graduate young men and women who love God, pursue truth, think independently, communicate effectively, and are prepared to influence the world for Christ. Students are challenged not only to know what they believe and why they believe it, but also to share that truth with conviction, humility, and wisdom.
